Road Conditions Report

Highway 5, southbound. Construction work between Miledge Creek Bridge and Thunder River Rd for 4.9 km (17 to 12 km north of Blue River). Until Sat Nov 7, 2026 at 5:00 PM PDT. From 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM PDT on weekdays. Watch for traffic control. Single Lane Alternating Traffic will only be required for a brief duration during mobilization and demobilization of materials and equipment.

Highway 5, southbound. Utility work planned between Field Rd and Junction Hwy 24 for 0.4 km (Little Fort). Starting Mon Dec 29 at 8:00 AM PST until Mon Dec 29 at 4:00 PM PST. Lane Closure. Single lane alternating traffic will be in effect. Watch for traffic control personnel.

Highway 5. Electrical maintenance planned between Carilla Rd and Clough Rd (10 km south of Barriere). Starting Wed Jan 14, 2026 at 9:00 AM PST until Wed Jan 14, 2026 at 3:00 PM PST. Single lane alternating traffic will be in effect. Expect minor delays.

Highway 5 (Coquihalla South), in both directions. Travel advisory in effect between the start of Highway 5 (Coquihalla South) and Exit 286: Merritt - 97C for 109.3 km (Hope to Merritt). Expect compact snow, bumpy sections, limited facilities and narrow lanes due to heavy snow load. Crews and equipment working throughout corridor.

The Southern Yellowhead highway is the name for the northern section of Highway 5.

Highway 5 follows the North Thompson River north from Kamloops along a parallel course with the Canadian National Railway. It passes the road to Adams Lake before entering the town Barriere. North of Barriere it goes past the highway 24 junction in Little Fort. North of Little Fort, while continuing to follow the North Thompson River and the CN Railway, Highway 5 reaches Clearwater.  From Clearwater Highway 5 proceeds northeast through Vavenby and Avola going to Blue River. heading through the Columbia Mountains to Valemount and Tête Jaune Cache and then crosses the Fraser River after which it immediately meets Highway 16.
